SNUbiks, the Cubing club under the Mathematics Society organised the very first SNU Open, a cubing league on April 8th and 9th. The competition was recognized by the World Cubing Association (WCA) which ensured global coverage. Cubelelo and Capital Cubing were the prime sponsors of the event. It was organised in the Table Tennis Court room in the Indoor Sports Complex on both days from 10 AM to 7 PM.
What makes this event special is the number of registrations that it received. It is remarkable that there were 92 registrations from India and USA combined. These participants competed in 12 events including Rubic’s cube, 2x2x2 cube, 4x4x4 cube, 5x5x5, 6x6x6, 7x7x7, Pyraminx, 3x3x3 blindfolded, 5x5x5 blindfolded, 6x6x6 blindfolded, Rubic’s clock and Skewb. This was the first time for Ayush, an eleven year old from Delhi. He has been practicing for 3 years now and qualified for finals of 3 events here. He visited the campus with his father and they left with a positive review. While talking to the Campus Caravan team, Ayush mentioned that he felt encouraged to pursue this hobby. He is looking forward to participate next year. Similarly, 14 year old Sahil who was the ambassador from Capital Cubing also complimented the organising team for a well-managed event.
The organising team was delighted with the response that they received for their first attempt. Aanchal Gupta, Secretary of the Mathematics Society congratulated the entire team and expressed their desire to organize such an event again probably during Breeze 2017. If you’re interested to participate again in the next edition, feel free to attend the training sessions and workshops organized by SNUbiks throughout the semester. The team is hoping to train more people and engage them in such competitions although there were just 3 registrations from SNU this time.
